http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2013/11/marco-rubio-on-edward-snowden-a-traitor-who-sparked-conspiracy-theories/281755/

This article begins by criticizing Marco Rubio who said that Edward Snowden was a traitor by alarming the american population that the NSA was spying on them. The author of this article than began to describe Edward Snowden as a Patriot. Their main argument was that you can't label Snowden as a traitor because he was trying to protect our liberties.

Digital Story Proposal

The internet today has created a new medium that people can use today to communicate. However some people use it to be unkind to other people. The use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating nature(Merriam-Webster Definition). This "cyberbullying" is very common today. It is very common to find cyberbullying on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook and it is very common to happen between teenagers. In the past before the internet bullying happened face to face and once the harm was done the person that was afflicted has a chance to move on and forget about what had happened. Cyberbullying happens on the internet and whatever the bully posts intending to harm their prey the whole world can see. I have seen these arguments happen on the internet before and it is just unacceptable. It is just awful that someone would post terrible things about someone else and they know that the whole world will see what they post. There are also many instances that the person that is bullied will commit suicide. That is just terrible that someone could heartlessly post something knowing that what they have committed could result in someone killing themselves. I stand by my idea that the internet should not be able to be used to harm other people emotionally to the point where there are instances that someone kills themselves. I will create a Digital Story to express my message to the world to stop cyberbullying.

This is a prime example of how Cyberbullying can end someones life. Cyberbullying can have terrible consequences.

Discussion Questions

1) In what ways are violent games changing the society that we live in today?

2) If there are games that educate people about issues that need to be raised and taught to our society, how are games that depict players using drugs, killing people, destroying things and other illegal things teach us to be bad people?

3) If games are very useful in teaching us people many things, then why do we choose to play violent games like Call of Duty where we kill other people? Is that what we really think they are good for?

Week 9

The purpose of our Social Action Project is to educate many individuals about internet privacy. However, we are more so trying to educate people about the harm that can come from carelessly posting things on social media websites such as Twitter, Facebook Instagram. Not to say that we are always tempted to post destructive things on the internet just because we all have easy access to social media through cell phones and computers, it is more based on the fact that social media has become very popular today and it can harm us if we use it to post anything reckless. Consequences of such actions include: getting fired from a job and losing a job opportunity. This is because since social media websites have become so popular that companies have started to look at social media websites in the process when they are considering hiring a new individual. That is how companies today can find out other aspects about the person that is seeking their job opening.

We plan to educate people about this privacy exploitation through a form of Guerrilla Art. The specific way we are going to use guerrilla art is through making bookmarks and putting them into books in the school library. This way we are putting around 300 notes around in the library that people will unknowingly as well as inevitably come upon and learn about issues that their lives are in the face of.

Included in this article below are several examples about how harmful social media websites really are. For example lets take the case that includes a school teacher named Ashley Payne. Ashley Payne was forced to resign from her job in 2009 because she posted inappropriate pictures on Facebook as well as posted a picture of her holding glasses of alcohol. Even though Paynes Facebook account was private, her boss, the principle eventually found out about these pictures and status posts. He in response asked Payne to leave with resignation.

Even though Paynes profile was Private, she still posted material that was not suitable for a teacher to post that. It is actually not appropriate for anybody to post material like that. We can easily learn from this example as well as the several other examples of how social media has ruined peoples lives

Q. Explain the ethical and/or political goal(s) of your social action project. Explain its ethical and/or political significance as your collaborative considers what it hopes to achieve. (250 words).

A. We have a plan to place inserts into library books so that we may inform people of the dangers of posting material recklessly on social media websites. We are hoping to prevent our fellow John Carroll students from posting foolish things on social media websites. These posts could affect them negatively later on in life, especially in the process of being hired for employment and enrolling in graduate schools.

Our social action project has a theme noteworthy to college students. The audience for our inserts are going to be applying for jobs within the next few years. A majority of John Carroll students currently have accounts on such social media sites as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. On these social media sites, our peers post potentially embarrassing, job-threatening things daily.

Ethically, they have the freedom to post whatever they wish. However, if potential (or current)  employers were to see some of the posted material of potential employees, they have a right to deny these posters of their could-be jobs. It is up to the social media users to regulate their posts, only posting what is in good taste.

As for social media and security, security on social media sites should be tightened according to each individual user’s preferences. If an individual desires to post things of an obscene nature, let him do so at his own peril. He can potentially not be hired, or he could also lose his job.

Toyota Prius Produces more Environmental Damage Than a HUMMER?

In the world that we live in today when we hear of somebody having a "Toyota Prius" we think that they are an environmentally conscious person trying to sustain the environment rather then harm it by using a gas-guzzling vehicle. But most people would be surprised if they knew how bad a Toyota Prius actually harmed the environment. In fact most people wouldn't believe you if you told them that the Toyota Prius is the source of some of the worst pollution in North America. Another amazing fact is that a Toyota Prius takes more combined energy to produce a HUMMER. The National Center for Political Analysis lists a few steps that have to be taken to produce a Prius;

  • The Nickel contained in a Prius' battery is taken from a mine in Ontario where it is also smelted. This action has caused so much environmental damage to the surrounding environment that NASA has had to shut down their 'dead zone' for testing moon rovers.
  • There is a factory that people call the 'Superstack' that has caused an environmental nightmare by spreading sulfur dioxide all across northern Ontario.
  • The acid rain around this area was so bad because or this sulfur dioxide that it resulted in the destruction of many plants and the soil slid off many hills.
  • After the leaving the plant in Ontario, the nickel travels to Europe, China, Japan and United States. This transportation is not an environmentally conscious planned trip.
Isn't it alarming the things that we don't know? This is a Japanese company that is harming North Americas Environment without even letting us know. Those aren't the most alarming facts though. According to a study that was done by CNW marketing, the total combined energy to produce a Prius is much greater than the amount of energy that it takes to produce a HUMMER:

  • If a Prius' expected lifespan is 100,000, than the Prius costs an average of $3.25 per mile that it is driven.
  • If a HUMMER's expected lifespan is 300,000 miles, than the HUMMER costs $1.95 per mile that it is driven.
These facts tell us that the HUMMER will last three times longer on the road than a Toyota Prius. The HUMMER also does this by using almost 50% less combined energy.

This raises me to an issue, Toyota advertised that their Toyota Prius was environmentally friendly. But really they are harming the environment more that gas powered vehicles, and they are doing this in our continent. This raises me to another question; what do we not know that is happening around us? and, What are advertisers lying to us about?

SAP Introduction

For my Social Action Project I would like to tackle the issue with e-waste and its effect on other people and the environment. E-waste is a very important issue in our world today that is harming our environment as well as other people. E-waste is what electronics are after dispose of them when we are finished using them. Typically our e-waste goes to different countries such as India or China where people living in poverty take them apart for their valuable materials to salvage for little money. Unfortunately, the easiest way to get these materials from these pieces of technology is through the dangerous process of incineration, this releases heavy metals that are harmful to our bodies such as lead, cadmium and mercury into the air and ashes from the burned technology that can come into contact with the body and become fatal. The major route of exposure for the general public from these metals is when mercury is released into the atmosphere. This leads to the bio-accumulation of mercury into the foodchain, particularly in fish. What people don't know is that we are the ones that are making this e-waste. We are making this e-waste in the sense that us consumers are buying products that contain harmful materials when broken down for their materials after we throw them away.

I would like to use guerrilla art for my Social Action Project. Guerrilla art is a very common way that people express their views and opinions. Guerrilla art has been used to change the pictogram of the person in a wheelchair to indicate something is wheel chair accessible. This was done by a group of people who put stickers depicting a more dynamic humanized pictogram over thousands of old symbols in New York City. It raised so much attention that when hurricane Sandy came and destroyed a lot of things, they replaced many old handicap signs with the new one.

Discussion Questions

What ways could the companies of Silicon Valley avoided the health and environmental outcomes?

Should the companies of Silicon Valley run tests before they set up their plants to see if what they were using was toxic or not? could they of known before hand or did they know because they were using toxic materials?

What is more important, the manufacturing of computer chips or the disposal of e-waste?

Internet Bandwidth Caps

Broadband caps for internet usage charged by Internet service providers is becoming more popular as time goes on. Broadband caps limit the amount of data that one can access from the Internet in a given month. If one would go over this cap the Internet service provider would implement overage charges for the data that one would use. The Internet service providers are not implementing these charges to manage their internet traffic, their motive is to make money. In the past Internet service providers would charge for quicker speeds, some still do that today, but it is more aggressive for Internet service providers to charge its users this way.

I feel that this is a problem because for one; it takes away profits from companies that require a lot of data for a user to use its services. This is the case for companies such as Netflix, Pandora and Google. This also bothers me because it can limit someones ability to access vital information and it can inhibit one from expanding their knowledge and being connected with the world. The news, social media and a vast array of information is unavailable to a person who hits this data cap, I feel that Internet service providers should not be in control of this.

Cookies

Internet Cookies are a very powerful tool that helps make designers of websites provide a better user experience to users by gathering information about the sites visitors. Nevertheless many people do not know that a Cookie stores user information on the user's hard drive so it can later be retrieved. Websites use Cookies in many different ways, some common examples are: determining how many people visit the site, storing user preferences for that site, remembering what is in your shopping cart, etc. On the other hand, Internet Cookies have created an uproar about Internet Privacy. Cookies help Web sites not only track your purchases, but also track which pages you read and what ads you click on. If you then enter your name and address to purchase something, the Web site potentially knows much more about you as an individual than a regular mail order company does. This is making people very uncomfortable for a few reasons, one of which is that it really makes targeting a lot easier and precise for advertisers and it gives websites the ability to sell your information to advertisers, websites and other companies. Another issue is that now there are companies like DoubleClick that can actually create cookies that are visible on multiple sites. DoubleClick places ads that are 1x1 pixels big that can load cookies onto your machine. DoubleClick then uses this information to track your movements across multiple sites. This information that DoubleClick acquires, without you even knowing about it, can form very rich profiles. These are anonymous but still contain a lot of information. What caused the largest uproar is that DoubleClick threatened to personalize these profiles and sell them to other people. This was perceived to be spying by most people. The good news is that you can control this process that Web sites use to get data from you. You can set your Internet browser to ask you for permission, where you choose to accept or deny, every time a Cookie wants to be placed on your hard drive.

Questions

1) What makes you believe that our Democracy will survive of fail?

2) Do you feel like our Democracy is falling apart or advancing

3) In your opinion who had a stronger and better put together Democracy, Romans or Greeks?

4) In what ways have you seen our Democracy advance since you have been alive?
Facebook is one of the largest and most popular social media sites that is available to the general population to. It is a free service where you can post what you are doing as well as post pictures that everyone can see. This has lead to an issue that many parents face today, whether they should let their child have a Facebook or not. The problem with having a Facebook is that EVERYONE can see your photos and to some parents that is scary because there are predators out in the world that might stalk and harm your child. Children however do not think about predators but more about connecting with their friends through this popular social media service. Children don't think twice about what they post and what they do post could harm them, they could post where they are going to be and other information that child predators could use to track them down and harm them. I think that you should be about 16 years old before you have a Facebook, 16 years gives you a lot of time to mature and realize that predators are a real threat to all of us. I also feel that Facebook should try to make their social media site a lot more private and secure so these crimes are less likely to happen and people are a lot more safe and what they post is not available for the whole world to see.

We take so many things for granted today. We don't even think twice sometimes about how lucky we are to have many things such as proper sanitation facilities or even access to clean water. Maybe that's because we don't know that we are lucky to have them. Maybe if people knew that 783 million people do not have access to clean water, and 2.5 billion people don't have access to proper sanitation facilities they would realize that they are very lucky. But at the same time maybe people do know that people don't have access to clean water or proper sanitation facilities and they are doing nothing about it. Can any of you imagine living a day of your life without either of these basic things? Living a life where you are surrounded by polluted water and sanitation practices that spread many dangerous diseases, and to collect water you have to hike for many hours to retrieve it, and this job is left to the women who in exchange for the hours trekking to get water for their families they have no time for education. So access to clean water also effects education? Wow thats something many people probably don't know. Some countries have responded to this issue, like Australia who have worked with local communities to build over 3,000 water supply points and over 3,000 latrines with comprehensive sanitation facilities. It's good to know that someone is taking a stand to this issue and hopefully many others will follow.
